ABOUT US

The Rent Brigade is a member-based organization that conducts tenant-grounded research and uses it strategically to inform organizing, advocacy, and policy campaigns aimed at winning material and structural change. We emerged in response to rent gouging following the 2025 LA wildfires, when displaced Angelenos were priced out of rehousing, and have since grown into an organization that analyzes and seeks to hold accountable the predatory forces driving displacement and exploitation, and translates that analysis into campaigns to advance policies that move housing out of the speculative market. By pairing research and data with political education and member participation, we work to equip renters with the tools, information, and collective power needed to build toward a model that treats housing as a public good.

“For good, planned, community housing available to the average citizen is not a “normal” product of a capitalist society. It can be achieved, partially, only when there is an active demand on the part of workers and consumers which is strong enough to over-balance the weight of real estate and allied interests on the other side.” Catherine Bauer
